Description:
Gen, now in fourth grade, finds himself living in a Hiroshima that remains in ruins three years after the bombing. His daily routine includes scavenging for scrap metal to survive. Despite the bleakness of his situation, there is a small glimmer of hope as commerce begins to return to the city. Unfortunately, Gen's mother is suffering from radiation sickness and her health is rapidly deteriorating. To cope with his struggles, Gen joins forces with a group of orphaned children led by a strong, older child. Among the group is a girl who bears the physical scars of the bombing and an elderly man who becomes a part of their makeshift family. The group finds solace in each other's support but must still face the harsh reality of many orphaned children perishing alone. Constantly looming over them are painful reminders of the catastrophic event that brought them together.
