Through impressive technological advancements, humanity has brought into existence hIEs, robots that mimic human behavior and serve society in various ways. Despite being treated unequally by most, Arato Endou, a warm-hearted high school student, regards hIEs as equals, though his economic status precludes him from ever owning one. However, Arato's life takes a drastic turn when a routine trip to a local grocery store turns into a grueling altercation. Brutally attacked by a hacked hIE, Arato's life is on the line until he is rescued by an extraordinary hIE carrying a weaponized coffin. This hIE, known as Lacia, is one of five advanced robots that recently fled from MemeFrame Corporation's possession. When a rogue vehicle threatens to run them over, Lacia makes a deal with Arato: he shall become her new owner in exchange for saving his life and holding full responsibility for her actions. Out of chances, he decides to depend on the artificial girl and allows her to reside with him. As Lacia adjusts to this new tranquil lifestyle, she cautions the entranced Arato that she lacks a soul.
