During a time far into the future, humankind has discovered a means of indefinite life through the purchase of mechanical bodies. Yet, this avenue to immortality is exceedingly costly. A destitute boy, Tetsurou Hoshino, covets a pass for the Galaxy Express 999, a cosmic train that traverses the vast universe. Its final stop reportedly offers free mechanical bodies to its passengers. But, when Tetsurou's mother meets her end at the hands of Count Mecha, a wicked machine-man hybrid, his dream comes crashing down. Just before his imminent demise, Tetsurou is rescued by a mysterious woman named Maetel. She is tall, blonde, and bears an uncanny resemblance to his mother. She bestows upon him a pass which, on one condition, grants him access to the Galaxy Express. The caveat being that they travel together. And so, Tetsurou embarks on an epic odyssey through an array of strange planets and thrilling escapades, as he seeks to fulfill his heart's deepest desire.
