In the absence of his father, teenage Ippo Makunouchi toils to assist his mother in managing her fishing boat rental business. His meek demeanor, sleep deprivation, and the smell of the sea render him an easy target for merciless bullies, who pummel him relentlessly on a daily basis. Following a violent after-school incident, Mamoru Takamura, a promising boxer, comes to Ippo's aid and brings him to the Kamogawa Boxing Gym to recuperate. Takamura and his fellow boxers are taken aback by Ippo's impressive punches, which stem from his sturdy muscles honed through years of physically demanding work for his family business. After a brief stint of training under Takamura, Ippo impresses the other boxers in a practice bout with the prodigious Ichirou Miyata. He finds himself with a fierce rival in Miyata and a mentor in Genji Kamogawa, the gym proprietor and a former boxer himself. As Ippo embarks on his official boxing career, he braves a gauntlet of formidable opponents, each more daunting than the last. Victory, defeat, and a cycle of grueling training await Ippo on his quest for greatness. With his unyielding fighting spirit and resilient physique, the benevolent youth aspires to take on the world.
