The Acorns and the Wildcat is a unique short film presented in the form of a picture-book. The creator of this anime, known for Night on the Galactic Railroad and Gauche the Cellist, deviates from the norm by having a narrator read Kenji's story while warm and evocative illustrations are animated on the screen. If you find the film oddly familiar, it may be due to the sumptuously minimalist animation by Yasuhiro Nagura, who served as the animation director of Mamoru Oshii's artsy 1986 feature Angel's Egg. Additionally, Kenji's wildcat is believed to have inspired Miyazaki's popular characters, Panda and Totoro. The film's refreshing approach of having the story read aloud rather than acted out, along with Kenji's magical language and narrative style, maintains viewer engagement.
