Description:
In this memoir set in North Korea during Japanese occupation, Kobayashi Chitose shares her life story. Although still young, Chitose realizes that the ongoing World War II will greatly affect her family, from small disappointments like not getting the backpack she wanted for school to her father's enlistment as a soldier. The war creates disruptions and hardships even after it ends, as the Koreans harbor resentment towards the Japanese rulers and make life unbearable for the remaining Japanese citizens. In order to protect his family from violence, Chitose's father, a Japanese veteran, takes a risk and relocates them to the southern area controlled by the Americans.
