Description:
From Messina, a good boy named Melos ventures to Syracuse, a magnificent city blessed with temples. The purpose of his journey is to purchase a ritual sword for his sister's upcoming marriage ceremony. Along the way, he connects with a gifted sculptor and the two become fast friends. Unexpectedly, during a leisurely stroll through the castle's gardens, Melos is apprehended by the King's guards. The monarch is consumed with paranoia, convinced that assassins are out to get him, and promptly condemns Melos to death. Faced with a harrowing situation, Melos' greatest desire is to attend his sister's nuptials. He implores the King to grant him three days to travel back to Messina to join in the festivities, promising to willingly return to Syracuse to face his impending execution. Despite harboring doubts and suspicions about Melos, the King agrees to the request. Wanting to test the trustworthiness of the condemned man, he demands that Melos find a willing substitute to stand in if he breaks his vow. To the King's surprise, the talented sculptor agrees to take Melos' place, ensuring that his friend can participate in his sister's joyous union.
