Shuuichi Nitori is a fifth grader who is often considered one of the most beautiful girls in school, but the unsettling truth is that Shuuichi is biologically a male. Luckily, Shuuichi has a childhood friend named Yoshino Takatsuki who also struggles with gender identity issues. Yoshino, who is biologically female, does not identify as a girl. Their shared struggle brings the two friends closer as they find comfort in each other's company. However, things become more complicated when they attend a new school and try to make friends while also struggling to maintain old relationships. The two must deal with the difficulties that come with growing up, being transgender, navigating relationships, and searching for acceptance in a world that doesn't always understand them. Takako Shimura's Hourou Musuko takes a deep and poignant look at the struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community. Shuuichi and Yoshino must discover their true selves as they enter puberty, make close bonds, experience love, and face some very difficult choices along the way. It is a serious exploration of gender identity and the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community.
