Description:
Directed by Kihachiro Kawamoto, Fuyu no Hin is an animated movie from 2003 that draws its inspiration from a renga of the same name written by Basho, a celebrated Japanese poet from the 17th century. In keeping with the collaborative spirit of the original source material, the creation of the film involved 35 animators who produced unique visuals for each of the 36 stanzas independently. Not only did the animators come from various parts of the globe, but they also included some of the leading names in animation. Each animator contributed at least 30 seconds of illustration to their stanza, and most of the sequences are less than one minute in length, except for Yuriy Norshteyn's which is nearly two minutes long. The final product released to the public comprises of a 40-minute animation followed by a one-hour "Making-of" documentary that features interviews with the animators. Fuyu no Hi gained critical acclaim and won the Grand Prize of the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2003.
