Living in a village on the outskirts of Antwerp, Belgium, is the gifted artist, Nello Daas. Earning a living by selling milk in the city's bustling market alongside his ailing grandfather, Nello's best friend is Alois Cogez. However, due to Nello's lower class and his landlord's belief that Nello is a corrupting force in Alois' life, Alois is sent away to school in Antwerp, separating the two friends. One day, while on his daily market runs, Nello discovers an art contest centered around his favorite artist, Peter Paul Rubens. The competition not only offers a monetary prize but also the chance to study at the same school as Alois. With renewed determination, Nello begins to plan his entry, but as difficulties arise, his dreams seem to be in jeopardy. Despite the obstacles, Nello's devoted companion is his dog, Patrasche. Nello rescued Patrasche from a cruel owner, and together they face the hardships that come their way. The film, Flanders no Inu, retells the tale of an innocent boy and his faithful canine companion navigating the ups and downs of life together to the end.
