Centuries ahead in time, the majority of humans have abandoned the planet Earth. Thus, the Galactic Alliance of Humanity takes charge of exploration and ensures prosperity. However, a threat emerges in the form of Hideauze creatures, pushing to a war to avoid humanity's demise. Enter 16-year-old lieutenant Ledo of the Alliance, backed up by an independent robot, Chamber, to combat the monsters. Unfortunately, Ledo loses control during confrontation and crashes onto a waterlogged Earth in a faraway corner of the universe. Gargantia, a vast fleet of scavenger ships, notices the wreckage in the ocean and retrieves it, assuming it might have some value. Ledo, unclear of the situation, believes the Gargantia crew hostile, so he boards their ship and takes a young messenger girl, Amy, hostage. However, he soon realizes that his perception was off; the Gargantia people are not dangerous. Though he's still in the dark about his next move and cannot connect with his space partners, Ledo attempts to understand his new lifestyle. Life seems tranquil, but he will soon learn that the planet is more than just an ocean-covered glob.
