The Valiante Kingdom launched hunts to eradicate individuals who practiced witchcraft in the name of the king. Even after seventeen years, the ferocity and scope of the witch hunts continue to escalate. But unbeknownst to the kingdom's inhabitants, the witch hunters' targets are actually the clandestine protectors of humanity: the Makai Knights and Alchemists. These courageous champions possess a tenacious desire to safeguard people from Horrors, demonic entities that invade souls tormented by sorrow and agony. Seventeen-year-old Leon Luis is one such Makai Knight. He inherits the legendary armor of the Golden Knight Garo from his mother, but grapples with the animosity stemming from her death at the kingdom's hands despite his incredible strength. Leon's father, German - also known as Zoro the Shadow Cutting Knight - continues to instruct him when he's summoned to investigate the recent upsurge of Horrors in the capital. Though German realizes that Leon may falter in his convictions, he takes him along to continue his apprenticeship. In the capital, the king's amicable son Alfonso San Valiante struggles to find a way to deal with the growing Horror threat. However, before he succeeds, he is betrayed and exiled from his own kingdom. To regain his rightful place on the throne, Alfonso embarks on a journey to acquire the assistance and strength he requires. Along the way, he encounters Leon, whose rapport with the prince will irrevocably alter the course of both their lives.
