Numerous enchanted "Artifacts" were stolen ages ago and scattered across the world. They ended up in the hands of unworthy people, causing harm and misfortune to those who exploited their power. The Hoshisato clan, a family of magicians, possess exclusive access to the Artifacts and make it their duty to restore them to their rightful place. Despite being inexperienced, Kana "Hatena" Hoshisato yearns to assist her parents, Maeve and Mamoru, in their quest and strives to improve herself. Coincidentally, her childhood friend Makoto Shiranui arrives at the mansion, seeking to study magic under her father's guidance, fulfilling a promise made amidst their younger days. Hatena is delighted to see her long-lost friend, only to be disappointed upon discovering that Makoto is not a girl but a boy, leading to a tumultuous reunion. Soon enough, Makoto learns about the Artifacts and the true identities of the magicians he holds in high regard. Undeterred, he persists in fulfilling his promises and stays true to his reason for learning magic, which is to alleviate the grief of those around him and, more significantly, to become worthy of being Hatena's partner.
