Will comes into existence in a new world after a life of monotony. He opens his eyes to the countenance of a skeleton, a ghost, and a mummy. The three beings inhabit the ruins of a city that has long crumbled, and they raise Will as if he were their flesh and blood. Will is educated in combat by the skeleton, Blood, and in sorcery by the ghost, Gus. The mummy, Mary, teaches him the values of faith and accountability. Above all, they instill in him the virtues of love. As Will matures and begins to comprehend the world he was brought into, he readies himself for the time when he must venture out on his own. A lifelong vow awaits him, a crucial rite of passage. When they reach adulthood, every individual must dedicate themselves to a deity of their choosing, and the intensity of their loyalty determines the extent of the deity's benediction. As the moment of his departure grows near, Will must reconcile himself to the reality of his undead guardians and tread into a territory for which they have no knowledge.
