For the past three years, Teikou Middle School reigned supreme in the world of basketball thanks to their legendary lineup, the "Generation of Miracles." This group of five prodigies was unbeatable, but their success was also thanks to a talented "Phantom Sixth Man" who remained in the shadows. Eventually, the team's insatiable appetite for victory left them disillusioned with the sport, and they went their separate ways in high school. To fill the gaps left by the former Teikou stars, Seirin High School basketball team scouts two new freshmen: Taiga Kagami and Tetsuya Kuroko. Despite their apparent differences, Kagami is a natural athlete full of passion, just returning from America, while Kuroko has little athletic talent and blends into the background. But it soon becomes clear that Kuroko was the Phantom Sixth Man that helped Teikou dominate the competition. Kuroko decides to prove to the Seirin team that he is valuable in his way, and Kagami sees his determination and forms a partnership with him. Kuroko becomes Kagami's shadow, while Kagami becomes his light, and they work together to conquer the Interhigh championship. However, complications arise when Kuroko's former teammates from Teikou reappear, threatening Seirin's chances at victory.
