Mushi are enigmatic creatures that defy the laws of nature. Some people know of their existence, while others fear them. They are responsible for many of life's inexplicable phenomena. In the past, a powerful Mushi posed a threat to all living beings. The Minai clan of Mushishi emerged as those who successfully defeated the malevolent force. The clan members are duty-bound to the Karibusa family, in which the Mushi is contained. Tanyuu Karibusa hires Mushishi Ginko to supervise Kumado Minai, the head of the Minai clan, in exploring an abandoned village where dead wood and houses have transformed into flourishing plants. The Minai clan might seem harsh compared to other Mushishi clans, and they appear to lack appreciation for beauty or sentimentality. Tanyuu suspects that there is more to their apathy than meets the eye. Ginko is determined to discover the truth as he follows Kumado through a "Path of Thorns," where Mushi originate from their bizarre sources and enter the world of the living. Rare and dangerous Mushi species lurk in this area, along with the secret behind the Minai clan's dedication to their ancient mission.
