By 2075, humanity has turned space travel into a mundane reality via technological advancements. Colonizing the moon, commercializing the cosmos, and establishing large space corporations have all been extracted from science fiction and brought to life. Ai Tanabe is a cheerful aspiring astronaut with a strong attraction towards the universe. She lands a job as a member of the Debris Section at Technora Corp. - a department responsible for clearing space debris between Earth and the moon. Only, the Debris Section, ridiculed by her colleagues, is severely understaffed and underfunded. Retrieving hazardous space junk is done using a rusty spaceship entertainingly dubbed the "Toy Box.” But this doesn't discourage Ai, who gradually acclimatizes to the idiosyncratic personalities that make up the Debris Section. Philippe Myers, the lanky Chief Clerk fumbles about with a heart of gold. The mysterious and cryptic Edelgard Rivera is a dependable temporary worker. Lastly, the impulsive, hot-tempered, and passionate Hachirouta Hoshino is yearning for a spacecraft to call his own. Planetes is a rare sci-fi series that frames space as the setting for the personal lives of regular people. These people may have been born on Earth, but dream of living beyond the skies.
