Chise is a regular high school student, petite and delicate with average intelligence. Her heart swells with joy as she navigates her budding romance with childhood friend Shuuji. They both reside in a small military town in Hokkaido where teenage woes are limited to who is dating whom and grumbling about the arduous ascent up "Hell Hill" each day before class. Everything changes when Shuuji and his pals journey to Sapporo to buy gifts for their girlfriends. An enormous air raid hits the city, wiping out thousands including one of Shuuji's companions. The attack signifies the start of war. As Shuuji navigates the chaos, he spots Chise but now she possesses metal wings and a colossal firearm replacing her right limb.
