At birth, mages are gifted with one of four "crests" which determine their magical potential. Gaius was blessed with a crest that excelled in creation, granting him unrivaled status as the world's strongest sage. Despite his impressive abilities, Gaius remained unsatisfied and yearned for a crest that favored close combat. Knowing that he was unable to change his inherently fixed crest, Gaius chose to reincarnate into the future in hopes of changing his fate. After centuries, Gaius reemerged as Mathias Hildesheimer and finally obtained the crest he had tirelessly pursued.
