Upon entering high school, the otaku Sakamichi Onoda's main goal was to join the anime club. In middle school, Onoda lacked companionship with whom he could discuss hobbies like gaming, Akihabara, and other otaku themes. Thus, high school presented an opportunity for him to find like-minded individuals. However, much to his dismay, he discovered the club has been disbanded. To revive the club, Onoda sets out to recruit four other members. Ever since he was a young boy, Onoda has had a fondness for riding his mamachari, a heavy bicycle with a step-through frame ideal for short rides. He frequently rode it to Akihabara to buy and peruse otaku merchandise. One day, during a training session, fellow freshman and road racing cyclist, Shunsuke Imaizumi spots Onoda cycling up a steep road and is taken aback by his proficiency. During a trip to Akihabara, freshman and road racing cyclist Shokichi Naruko stumbles upon Onoda while searching for Gundam plastic models. He's impressed by Onoda's cycling abilities and later learns they attend the same school. Both Naruko and Imaizumi try to persuade Onoda to join the bicycle racing club, but he remains undecided.
