In Night City, a futuristically-styled metropolis in California, aspirations are all but hopeless. A teen named David Martinez resides in the impoverished slums, endeavoring to fulfill his mother's lifelong ambition for him to be employed by Arasaka, the world's leading security corporation. His mother, in turn, endeavors tirelessly to maintain their family's well-being. David's life is thrown into disarray when he is victimized by a gang of street toughs, leading him to discover Sandevistan cyberware, a prosthetic that affords its wearer superhuman speed. Overwhelmed with anger, David installs it in his back to seek vengeance against one of his aggressors - this results in his expulsion from Arasaka Academy, destroying his chances of pleasing his mother. After witnessing David's astonishing capabilities, the gorgeous data thief Lucyna "Lucy" Kushinada offers him the opportunity to work alongside her, providing him with a path to self-redemption. However, engaging with Lucy exposes David to a team of Edgerunners - cyborg criminals who will break any law for a price. At great peril, Edgerunners risk their lives and often experience detrimental psychological effects, yet David is willing to gamble everything to survive within a corrupt system.
