Saichi Sugimoto spent countless hours panning for gold in Hokkaido during the early 1900s following the Russo-Japanese war. After earning the nickname "Sugimoto the Immortal" for his bravery on the battlefield, the retired soldier sought to fulfill a promise he made to his best friend before his unfortunate death in action. This promise was to support his friend's family, especially his widow who needed medical treatment abroad due to her failing vision. During a drinking session, Sugimoto was told about a man who committed a heinous crime of murdering a group of Ainu and stealing a significant amount of gold. This man hid the gold in Hokkaido and tattooed a coded map of its location onto the bodies of his fellow inmates. The only way to find the treasure was to decipher the map. Initially, Sugimoto was skeptical of the story until he discovered the same tattoos on the corpse of the inebriated man who shared the tale with him. Before he could react, he was threatened by a grizzly bear but was saved by a girl named Asirpa, an Ainu and daughter of one of the victims. Together, Sugimoto and Asirpa made a pact to collaborate and locate the concealed treasure. Asirpa sought to redeem what was rightfully her people's, and Sugimoto was determined to carry out his friend's last wish. With Asirpa's skills in hunting and Sugimoto's experience in survival, they were an unstoppable force.
