Description:
This Japanese TV series, based on folk tales, is presented in omnibus format and is one of Japan's longest-running shows. It was also Group Tac's second TV series, following the documentary anime, The Road to Munich, about the Olympics in 1972. The series was unique in that the creative team was meant to change from episode to episode, an idea suggested by director Sugii Gisaburo, a revolutionary figure in Japanese film history. The result was a visually diverse and rewarding series, unlike any other in anime history. Although this approach sometimes led to varying quality, there were still many standout episodes with talented staff like SUGII Gisaburo himself, SHIBAYAMA Tsutomu, FURUZAWA Hideo, RIN Taro, and HIKONE Norio. Despite new episodes ceasing in 1995, the series continues to be widely broadcast. Nippon Animation's Famous Works of Japanese Literature attempted a similar approach later on, but none were as successful or long-lasting as this innovative anime series.
