Once a vibrant, self-proclaimed mad scientist, Rintarou Okabe now exists as a mere shell of his former self. Suffering from depression and psychological trauma due to his inability to save his friend Makise Kurisu, he has abandoned his eccentric persona and now leads an average life as a college student. Amidst a group of friends ignorant to his time travel exploits, Okabe spends his days attempting to forget the traumas of his past alone. While working as a receptionist at a campus technology forum, Okabe is introduced to Maho Hiyajo - a spunky, petite woman who later reveals herself to be the interpreter at the event organized by Professor Alexis Leskinen. To the astonishment of the audience, Maho and Alexis introduce Amadeus - a groundbreaking AI system capable of saving an individual's memories, and creating a simulation of said person, inclusive of their quirks and personality traits. In a post-presentation discussion with Maho and Alexis, Okabe discovers that both individuals were colleagues of Kurisu's in college and that they've utilized Amadeus to simulate her life. Hired by Alexis to research Amadeus's behavior, Okabe is presented with the opportunity to interact with the shadow of his long-lost friend. However, as he begins to dive deeper into the complexities of the past, Okabe must tread carefully and remain mindful of the dire consequences that come with interfering with the natural flow of time.
