The Four Cardinal Heroes, a group of average men from present-day Japan, were summoned to the doomed kingdom of Melromarc. The kingdom had suffered for years from the destructive Waves of Catastrophe, and the heroes were tasked with stopping this recurring calamity. Each of the four heroes was gifted a weapon - a sword, spear, bow, or shield - to fight the Waves. Naofumi Iwatani, an avid otaku, was chosen as the "Shield Hero," despite his weak shield. He was subjected to scorn and ridicule by his fellow heroes and the citizens of Melromarc due to his lack of offensive skills and unremarkable personality. Determined to succeed, Naofumi gathered the necessary resources and allies to train and improve his skills. He eventually teamed up with Malty Melromarc, the only one willing to work with him. But Malty's deceit led to Naofumi being falsely accused of her misconduct, and he was met with hostility and discrimination from the Melromarc people. Driven by despair and mistrust, Naofumi embarked on a quest to redeem himself and his reputation. However, the burden of traveling alone became too much, forcing him to buy a dying demi-human slave named Raphtalia as his companion. As the Waves drew closer to Melromarc, Naofumi and Raphtalia were tasked with protecting the kingdom and its inhabitants from a grim fate.
