Most people would deny believing in extraterrestrials, time travelers, or those with extrasensory perception (ESP) if asked in a survey, and Kyon, an average high school student, is no different. However, a chance encounter with a girl on his first day of school shakes Kyon's convictions to the core. In an introduction to their class, a stunning girl named Haruhi Suzumiya declares her boredom with mundane individuals and her desire to seek out supernatural beings. Kyon is stunned by her announcement and soon learns of her frustration with the lack of paranormal clubs at their school. He unwittingly inspires her to start her own club, the Spreading Fun all Over the World with Haruhi Suzumiya Brigade, also known as the SOS Brigade. Despite their normal appearance, the SOS Brigade's four members, including Kyon, each harbor secrets related to Haruhi. The other members are the taciturn bookworm Yuki Nagato, the timid upperclassman Mikuru Asahina, and the eternally optimistic Itsuki Koizumi. All of them are recruited by Haruhi, and together they embark on a series of misadventures that whisk Kyon away and bring him closer to the truth about Haruhi's identity and nature.
